HOUSING

THE SITE

The site is in Tondiarpet, a 1.5 acre land. A housing community

was designed for the fishermen and oil mill workers nearby.

The site is sea facing and has 2 abutting roads.

THE CONCEPT

The culture and context of the site is carried forward in this design.

Clusters were formed instead of going for vertical development. Low rise villas were provided on the east side and the midrise clusters were developed on the west side.

The vehicular path is through the periphery and the pedestrian path is through the internal pathways.

An amenity is provided in the center such that it is always shaded by the buildings. The people would spend more time in this pa
rticular space since they are already very social in nature.

                           MAIN ENTRY                                                               AMENITY

  •     The apartment was designed in a way that all the units are arranged in a cluster manner and they are connected through semi open corridors.
  •     It doesn't follow a grid pattern system.
  •    The units are arranged  in zig zag manner thereby forming open terrace gardens at each floor.
  •    All odd floors and even floors have the same plan.

THE WIZARD SCHOOL

The site was in Chedilapakkam, a village. It was a two and half acres. A school was asked to design at that particular site.

A school obviously has to be interesting in such a way that children shouldn't cry for coming to school. Rather they must enjoy each and every moment being there.

The school being in a rural environment, has to be self supporting. For example, making use of Passive energy rather than active.

The concept was to provide the children a better study space, more like a castle in order to attract them. It was purely inspired from the Hogwarts school of Harry Potter.

An innovative idea of producing tiles from tyres as a process of recycling was made  in recent times. These tiles were used for the roof.

For the walls, rhino bricks were used. It is made from recycled plastic waste and recycled sand. Above all the most attractive element in making these bricks is there is no use of water during manufacture.

This was the given 2.5 acres. The blocks were arranged in accordance with the VENTURI EFFECT. The blocks were arranged in a fan like orientation. So that it catches the air and passes through it in a cooler way. Thereby reducing the cost of active energy for ventilation. All the classrooms were arranged in a manner that every single space receives maximum light and ventilation.

The above picture is the ground floor plan. The intermediate spaces were designed as per their age groups. Like tents, kids play area, gazebo study space, senior junior interaction nests etc.              This is the first floor plan with some classes and the computer science and general science lab.

These are the elevation and section of the school with the detailings of a castle.

This structure creates a curiosity among the children to use this space, it has no connection with the site context.

Bus Stop

A bus stop design was made by me. Before that I made a literature study about bus stops. I got to know about the standard measurements of the bus stops and it's components.

Different types of roofing were also documented.

A case study was made about Kressbad Bus stop located in Austria. It was a very different bus stop due to its unique concept. It has 2 floors, ground and first floor. There is a tennis court behind this bus stop. People watch the tennis match in the first floor during their wait. They also have openings to see whether the bus arrives. It was constructed by the Rintala Eggertson Architects.

The target is to create a pleasant environment for the people. This was achieved with the help of wind chimes. Yes, knowing the fact that music, sounds and vibrations creates a subconscious pleasure.  This is much needed for a busy place like a bus stop. The form is inspired from the shape of a bell.

Cross ventilation and stack effect was achieved in the form. Incorporation of Hostile architecture makes the space better to use. It's highly efficient to make to make the building sustainable, green concrete is the major material used to make this chime.

A street was chosen and a model was made in scale.

The blocks represent the shops and buildings. A railway track is also present besides the road.

Pop was used to make to make the road and platform. And ofcourse it's a thermocol base!

Rural Model

A rural house model was made. It was a very old house. I made use of cardboard and POP for its texture.

Rectangular cardboard pieces were joined induvidualy to give the look of roof tiles.

The Shell

It's about the design for a fictional character Paaru from a Tamil movie Maara. It was started with a character analysis and developed by a mood board.

This design was made for a short stay purpose.

It was developed from the concept of a shell which has a strong connection with the character in the movie. The rooms were made separate to make the person even more attached to the environment.
